| Ludwig Mies van der Rohe (1886-1969) began his career working in his father's stonemasonary business. He then took an apprenticeship with Berlin furniture designer Bruno Paul. He later joined the office architect Peter Behrens, whose work presaged the modern movement. Mies established his own office in Berlin in 1912 a, and went on to become a member of the Deutscher Werkbund and Director of the Bauhaus. In 1938 he immigrated to the United States and setup a practice in Chicago. One of his most famous buildings is the German Pavilion built for the 1929 Barcelona Exposition. |
