About Designer
Gerrit Thomas Rietveld (1888-1964) was born in the Netherlands and was the son of a cabinetmaker. He worked in his father's workshop from the age of eleven and in 1911 became an independent cabinetmaker. He studied architectural drawing classes and in 1917-18 designed the prototype for the 'Red Blue' chair. In 1919 he joined the De Stijl group, an association of painters, architects and writers involved in a programme of radically renewing art. Their style, developed by the painter Piet Mondrian and architect Theo Van Doesburg, was based on the principles of cubism and associated itself with a rigid geometrical order.
Rietveld designed several buildings based on the principles of De Stijl, one of the most famous of which is the "Schroder House" built in 1924 which he designed using the basic form of a cube with many glass walls so the internal and external space became one. In 1927 he designed experimental plywood and fibreboard furniture and during the depression created a range of furniture made from packing-crate components in response to the need for low cost furniture. He went on to design other chairs in aluminium and bent metal but in his final 'Steltman' chair, designed in 1963 he returned to using solid wood and geometric form.
