The Le Corbusier LC3 Grande Confort armchair orginally designed in 1928 remains one of the most recognised design classics. The LC3 armchair was the first design in which Le Corbusier applied his vision for a visible external frame which embodied the clean minimalism and industrial rationale of the International Style. Le Corbusier chose chrome plated tubular steel for his design because it was readily available and inexpensive permitting the furniture to be mass produced.

Full Description
Many of our customers ask about the differences between our products made in Italy and low cost reproductions. This armchair inspired by Le Corbusier is constructed from chrome plated tubular steel with Italian aniline leather upholstery and sumptuous full-bodied cushions. Some suppliers state that their products use Italian leather to disguise Eastern origins. Our leather is premium-quality drum-dyed coloured full grain (not corrected) aniline leather with protective finish. It is available in two qualities, 'A' or 'B'. Both leathers are beautifully soft, Category 'A' leather has more of a matt finish and is slightly smoother than Category 'B'.
The tubular steel frame is pre-stressed, pre-buffed high gauge steel with multistep chromium-plating to prevent chipping or peeling and is polished to a perfect finish. Low cost reproduction Le Corbusier furniture usually incorporates stainless steel metalwork. The stainless steel does not show the shine of chrome and the 35 micron plating is used to hide the joints in the tubular steel which will always remain evident on a stainless steel version. The profiles of our bases are 'L' shaped as they should be rather than rectangular so as to retain the shape of the cushions. It is important that the tubular frames are not welded to the base section but are held together with bolts to allow essential movement of the frame. Without this movement the frame is likely to break over time.
The cushions of low grade products are usually filled with a single foam pad. To provide and retain the proper shape and comfort, our cushions are filled with a composite filling.
The bases of our Le Corbusier LC3 are properly sprung with nylon webbing. In some inferior examples you may find that the sprung webbing has been substituted with cardboard which results in a reduction in comfort.
Our upholstery is available in over 40 different leather colours in 3 different standards, including contract standard. Expertly constructed to exacting detail to do full justice to the mastery of the original design.
About Designer
Le Corbusier (1887-1975) was born in Switzerland and was an architect theorist and designer. He worked and wrote with a unique vision, energy and clarity that made him one of the most influential figures shaping the international style during the early 1900's. Born Charles Edouard Jeanneret, he rechristened himself Le Corbusier in Paris in 1920, around the time he started his journal L'Esprit Nouveau. He was cofounder of the Congres International d'Architecture Moderne (CIAM) and an active member of the Parisian art scene. His philosophy for minimalist modernism was built around the idea of the home as a 'machine for living'.
