In the 1940's, Harry Bertoia, an Italian-born sculptor, was working with Charles Eames on ergonomic studies that would be used to create practical forms for furniture. In the period from 1950-1954, after parting ways with the Eames Office, Bertoia produced the five wire pieces that became known as the Bertoia Collection for Knoll. Innovative, comfortable and strikingly handsome, the chairs have a delicate appearance that belies their strength and durability. Minimum order quantity 4. Made in Italy.

A classic, modern design that enhances any environment, Bertoia's wire inspired chairs remain a fascinating study in bent metal and a fixture of mid-century design. Chrome plated steel wire frame with foam cushion upholstered in leather or fabric. Leather seat pads available in black, chocolate, red, ivory, natural, white and cognac. Fabric seat pads available in red or black woven fabric.

About Harry Bertoia

Harry Bertoia (1915-1978) born in Italy, a sculptor, university lecturer and furniture designer is best known for the Diamond Chair which he created for Knoll in 1952. His unique approach to incorporate wire rods into his furniture designs were highly innovative and turned such chairs into design icons. Bertoia taught metal crafts at Cranbrook Academy of Art and worked with Charles Eames to develop his well-known molded plywood chairs. He was commissioned by Eero Saarinen to design a metal sculptured screen for the General Motors Technical Center in Detroit. He has won many awards including the craftsmanship medal from the American Institute of Architects, as well as AIA's Gold Medal.
