About Poul Kjaerholm

Poul Kjaerholm Poul Kjaerholm (1929-1980) was born in Denmark and studied at the School of Arts and Crafts in Copenhagen where he later taught. His work stands out from his Danish contemporaries as he favoured the use of steel frames rather than traditional wood. However he did use natural materials such as cane, canvas, leather and rope in many of his designs. In 1955 he designed the famous PK 22 chair for which he received the Lunning Award and in 1958 he became a lecturer and professor in the furniture and interior design department at the Royal Danish Academy of Art in Copenhagen. In 1973 he became head of the Institute for Design and Finally professor in 1976 until his early death in 1980. His designs are in the permanent collection of the Musem of Modern Art in New York, the V&A Museum in London and other museum collections in Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Germany. He won numerous awards in industrial and graphic design, including Grand Prix at the Milan Trienale (1957 & 1960), the ID Award and the Lunning Award.
