About Mart Stam

Mart Stam (1899-1986) born Martinus Adrianus Stam studied drawing in Amsterdam from 1917-1919. He began work as a draftsman for an architectural practice until he moved to Berlin in 1922. In 1923 he exhibited at the Bauhaus and in the following years published many articles on architecture and design. In 1926 he made his first cantilevered chair. His designs were exhibited at the Stuttgart 1928 "Der Stuhl"exhibition and he founded the "Congres Internationaux d'Architecture Moderne" in 1927 with Gerrit Rietveld and Hendrik Petrus Berlage. He went on to work in Russia as a town planner and later taught architecture and design in Dresden and Berlin. In 1966 he moved to Switzerland and retired.
