| George Nelson (1908-1986) was one of the most powerful forces behind the development of this century's American design movement. As a thinker, writer, organiser and designer, Nelson had during his career a string of influential positions and brought his ideas of how furniture was marketed and how by using space in a well thought out manner modern living could be enhanced. He wrote in the 1952 Herman Miller catalogue that the pieces exhibited should be, "a permanent collection...in the sense that it will not be scrapped for each market or for each new trend." As almost every contributing designer and design has become a popular icon for the look of that period and still continues to be popular in the 21st Century, it would seem that Nelson achieved his goal. |
