About Charles Rennie Mackintosh

Charles Rennie Mackintosh Charles Rennie Mackintosh (1868-1928) was born in Glasgow and in 1884 he began his career at a local architect's office. He later moved to another practice before winning the 'Alexander Thompson Travelling Scholarship' which meant he was able to travel to Italy, Belgium and France. In 1897, he won the competition for the new Glasgow School of Art Building and was also commissioned to decorate Miss Cranston's Buchanan Street Tea Rooms. He exhibited at the Vienna Secession Exhibition to widespread acclaim and in 1903 gained a commission from W.W. Blackie, the publisher for Hill House, Helensburgh. In 1904 he took on another project for Miss Cranston, this time for her Willow Street Tea Rooms. His last major project, the School of Art Library finished in 1909, received little recognition. Mackintosh moved to London in 1916 where he designed textiles for Foxton's and Seftons. He moved to France in 1923 where he painted until his death in 1928.
