| Alvar Aalto (1898-1976) was born in Finland and studied architecture in Helsinki at the Technical University from 1916-1921. He began working as an exhibition designer moving to architecture in 1923 and furniture design in 1925. He became a member of the "Congres Internationaux d'Architecture Moderne" in 1928 and a year later established a plywood workshop with Otto Korhonen. In 1935 he founded 'Artek' a furniture design company with Harry and Marie Gullichsen and in the same year patented a cantilevered chair support made of wood. Aalto's work was shown at a number of world exhibitions to great acclaim and in 1957 he was awarded a gold medal by the RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects). |
